KANYINI: South Australian Space Services Mission

MISSION GOAL: To work in partnership with industry and government to capitalise on NewSpace opportunities, contribute to a thriving and enduring South Australian space sector and support Australia’s national space strategy.

The South Australian Space Services Mission is a collaboration between the South Australian Government represented by the South Australian Space Industry Centre, mission lead SmartSat CRC, Adelaide-based commercial satellite manufacturer Inovor Technologies, and global IoT provider Myriota.

The South Australian Government has invested $6.5m to deliver the Kanyini mission.

KANYINI means responsibility and unconditional love for all of creation and encompasses the key principles of Aboriginal life including creation (tjukurrpa), soul (kurunpa), family (walytja), and land (ngura) – it is an enormous caring with no limit; it has no timeframe and is eternal.

How Kanyini got its name

In 2021, every South Australian school was invited to participate in a competition to name Australia’s first state satellite.

The winning entry, Kanyini, was entered by students from Findon High School and announced at the Australian Space Forum on 15 September 2021.

"All communities on the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands are proud that the word 'Kanyini', a tenet of our ancient language, will be used for the new satellite. The combination of ancient Australia and modern Australia coming together in this new space frontier will be a matter of great celebration for the first South Australians of Central Australian Deserts."
